Great for long walks

I have a one wide foot and the other is longer. I was directed to a wide size with an insert for my high arch. I wore these for over 170 miles over 14 days. No blisters, no issues. However, the sole does seem to wear out faster than it should. For the price, I would like to see a more quality sole. Someone else mentioned that the heel section wore out and I would say the quality there is also lacking. But these shoes performed for me when I needed them to.

Very poor durability

For context - I do not run. I bought these shoes as everyday walking shoes because they were comfortable, especially due to the big toe box and cushioned insoles. I also work remotely from home so I only go on walks 2-4 times a week for about 40mins at a time around the neighborhood. Given this context, I was extremely disappointed in how much the soles wore out; basically, the yellow padding had worn off and the white padding was tearing only after 6 months of light usage. The manufacturer may state that wear and tear is normal but this is NOT NORMAL wear and tear for shoes designed and made for runners. I was willing to keep the shoes even with this abnormal wear and tear because they are comfortable, but the top of the shoe tore when my foot brushed against the underside of a stair... As a mechanical engineer with 10+ years of industry experience, I believe that brushing the top of the shoe against a semi-rough surface should be anticipated given that these shoes are made for outdoor usage, and the shoes should be designed to withstand the friction between the shoe and surface. I expect more from a pair of athletic shoes that are nearly $200 after tax. I am very hesitant to buy HOKA shoes again after this terrible 1st experience.

Poor quality, coming apart

Very poor quality, as others some others have noted in their reviews. I don't know if it is a quality control issue or overall problem, but my Gaviotas failed after a few months of very moderate use (Ibackground - do not run, I'm disabled and only used these for walking very moderate distances). The shoes were well cared for. The adhesive holding the sole to the shoe is failing, so that it is peeling away at the front of the shoe. Hoka Warranty Dept says that is normal wear and tear. No reconsideration process. Despite having been a customer for 15 years, I would not recommend Hoka to anyone again and I will not purchase from them.

New design changes failed for me

I love the 4 version. My ankles turn in, so I need stable arch support to keep them neutral. Without the support, I will have pain in my ankles, legs and balls of my feet. I read about the changes to the version 5 and thought I would try them. I ordered a size 9 regular width. I was disappointed. The toe box is huge. There is no way to tighten that area. The upper part of my foot and toes would slip when I walked. There is no arch support. It felt like the outer side of the shoe was higher and pushing my foot inward. Also, I tried tightening the laces more but the shoe still felt like it was slipping on my heel. Bummed, I returned them.

Much too wide!

I really wanted these to work, but they are way too wide. Other Gaviotas have fit me perfectly, but when I try to lace these tight enough there is extra fabric on top of the shoe kind of bunched up and it still doesn't work. I thought wearing my most cushioned hiking socks might help, but my foot was still swimming in the shoe. It seemed to defeat the purpose of having a stability shoe the way my foot was moving around. They would be great if a B width actually fit like a B because otherwise they are very comfortable. If the shoe is going to stay this wide in future versions, hopefully HOKA will release it in a narrow.

I miss the Gaviota 4

So, I had multiple pairs of the 4 and I loved them. Finally broke down and got the new 5 (which I’d been putting off based on reviews). They’re comfortable but with the increased width in the toe box, my insoles don’t fit. There’s about 1/2 inch gap between the insole and the outside of the shoe. So far it’s not bothering me , but it’s only been 3 days. What I don’t like about the redesign is the wider toe box in general. And since you can’t tighten that area of the shoe with the laces it ends up bunched up to be tight enough in my foot. Not loving the redesign.

Blisters from insole, but otherwise love ‘em

I loved this shoe in so many ways, but sadly couldn’t keep them. Pros: plushy, easy ride, super comfortable, offered great stability. Cons: the liner rubs on the medial part of my arch and after about 3 miles starts to irritate my skin to the point a large blister forms. I hoped that with a longer break-in period that the blister would stop coming back, but alas it kept coming back. Couldn’t keep wearing them. The same problem happened with me with the Arahi’s. Hoka, please fix this rigid lipped insole so that I can properly enjoy your stability shoes?! This didn’t happen to me with the Gaviota 3’s!

Super comfortable shoe for long hikes

While the Gaviota 5 is technically not a hiking shoe, I've worn it on multiple Colorado 14ers as well as Mt. Whitney, although I had to carry traction and add it for parts of the trails, because the sole is not designed for technical trails. I found the shoe very comfortable out of the box, although it does get better after a few wears. Because of the large toe box, I size down from a 9.5 to a 9. The shoe is meant for the road and has incredible cushioning, and the early stage meta rocker makes the shoe feel very smooth and responsive when walking on the street. I've bought multiple actual hiking boots and shoes, but all feel clunky and hard compared to the Gaviota, which is why I always go back to it for long hikes. If only Hoka would make a trail/ hiking version of the Gaviota 5 it would be perfect.

Supportive but wear too quickly.

Hoya is probably the most supportive of all the stability models and brands. My biggest criticism is the lack of finishing, simple punched holes instead of metal grommets in all of the lace holes. This interior of Hokas is weak and wears out after just a few months. Hokas are in the upper price bracket for athletic shoes and I need to be made with better quality. I feel they start to wear out too quickly and don’t live up to quality they need to be. Also the extremely light colors are pretty but not practical, they show the dirt to easily. It seems that either the shoes are very dark or very light when a color in between is more practical. After this last pair of Hokas I returned them and got another brand, not as supportive but didn’t wear out as fast.

Worn out only 2 months of neighborhood walks

Really had high hope for this shoe. Incredibly comfortable right out of the box.- I bought these shoes as everyday walking shoes because they were comfortable, I luv the big toe box and cushioned insoles. I'm retired and wear the shoe for daily walks 2-3 miles about 40 to 60 mins around the neighborhood. I am extremely disappointed how worn the soles are after 2.5 months of use and plan to exchange...hopeful just a flawed pair. They are no longer comfy and are too worn

The shoes is too wide or loose overall.

I bought the Gaviota 5 at REI in size 7. I end up returning the shoes because it was way too loose especially in the front. I had 4 pairs of the Gaviota 3 in the past and I loved them. It was the perfect fit for me. The Gaviota 5 is way too wide for me even after replacing the insole thinking that it will help with the fitting, but it did not. Thankfully REI allowed me to return the shoes without any questions.
