Fresh teal color bleached easily from pool
I've used these shorts off an on for a year, maybe 10 times. They fit well and the liner is comfortable. But they have gotten extremely bleached out from use in the pool and the fresh teal color now looks like an off-white. They are now a backup pair because they look pretty terrible. To note, I wear other brands of trunks to the same pool (Quicksilver, Katin, Catch Surf) and they have not bleached out at all.
Definitely size down!
Not very sure these are a 5" inseam! I actually had to double check I hadn't bought the 7" by mistake. They're also a bit too large for comfort. I'm a medium (5'10, normal-athletic build), but I find myself having to pull these up constantly, even when tied, making swimming especially awkward, Also- and I see this complaint has popped up in other reviews- the pockets are significantly too long. Anything in the front pockets will sag unflatteringly all the way down (sometimes past) the hem, and bounce around, pulling the shorts down even more than they do on their own. I was really excited about these, and I like the colors offered (especially the yellow, which is what I went for). Considering trying for a smaller size.
Like a fine wine…
Baggies just keep getting better! There’s a reason why they haven’t changed these much in forty years, they’re simply the best all around shorts. First the fit is perfect. They’re comfortable, but look good. PLENTY of pocket space (you don’t think about that until you need it). You can swim in them, their crazy durable so you can hike in them, but they’re also super light for running, but they don’t look like athletic shorts so you’re fine going out and about in them too. Plus it really matters that they’re 100% made out of recycled materials. Specifically, they’re made out of fishing nets that used to be just thrown into the ocean. And Patagonia’s fair trade certification means that you know that the person, the living, breathing human, who made your shorts was paid a living wage and worked in safe conditions. I absolutely love everything about these shorts!
love these!
I purchased these as a need, had an accident with the pants I was wearing in store, and needed something to wear for the rest of the day, so I picked a pair up. I had intended to return these, as I’m cheap and $65 for a pair of shorts made me cringe… but I did just purchase another pair, on top of the pair I bought in store. I LOVE these. I have women’s baggies as well, but the men’s fit better to me, as I don’t like super short shorts. The mesh liner is a little annoying if going commando in them, they almost always make one side into my buttcrack, but when wearing underwear, they are phenomenal. I wear them out and about, hiking, swimming, etc.
get these shorts
I wear these shorts everywhere! I have gone swimming at the beach and they were dry by the time I got to the restaurant to eat lunch. Sometimes they sag when I have a lot of stuff in my pocket. Phone, keys, wallet. Same stuff as everyone else. These shorts really feel as though you’re wearing nothing. The colors pop too. The last hike I did was a short 4 miler in them. They can chafe after a while though just a heads up.
Wish they made them without the liner.
A lot of hype behind these shorts but I think it’s because of the Patagonia tag in them. A basic short that everyone makes. They have an inner liner inside that will stick to your skin and is super uncomfortable. I wish they’d make them without the liner.
Rock scramble approved
Wore these on a hike today for the first time and they were great. Held up incredibly well scrambling up and down rock faces. Never felt like they were going to rip or tear on the rough surfaces and didn't restrict motion at all. Came back to buy them in a few more colors so I figured I'd leave a review while I was at it.
Cut does not work for me
I really wanted to like these shorts, but I don't. The fabric clings to the front of my legs when lifting a knee to go uphill or even squat down. I don't know if it's the cut or the weight of the fabric, but I it's annoying. I am continually having to reach down and pull the fabric off of my leg. It almost feels as if I was wearing the shorts backwards, which is not the case. The Patagonia Any Trail shorts, which I have used for years and love, have never given me that problem. When walking on level trails the baggies are fine, but as soon as I have to step over a boulder, ugh. I am 5'11", 170-lbs with a 34" waist and wearing a medium. Maybe a large would have worked better.
Sizing change or single bad pair?
I have been wearing multiple pairs of size medium 5" Baggies I bought in 2020, and so I ordered the same size this go-around (2022). The new pair is cut larger in both length and waist size. I seriously wonder if the factory goofed and mistagged a size large as a size medium. Returning these to my local REI as soon as my wife lets me use the car.
Practical and Well Made
My husband wanted swim shorts that were not too long, had a liner, and a draw string, and came in a neutral, solid color. These grey ones, from Patagonia, fit the bill. He wears them for swimming and for sailing a Sunfish. He notes that they also dry quickly.
