Clydesdale power
A lot more contact surface than my old SPD’s. My foot used to roll around on my old Spuds causing my knee to roll too, not on these. I feel way more solid standing on these 8120’s with so much more power delivery to the pedal. Solid buy!
Great pedals for road, trail, or gravel
I ride mostly on roads but I've been using SHIMANO PD-M530 pedals which are generally classified as a mountain or trail bike pedal. I've tried Shimano road pedals but I've had problems clipping in to them when I start on an up hill. Definitely requires younger legs than mine to get up enough momentum to give time to get your un-clipped foot into the pedal. The PD-M530 (and the PD-M8120) pedals along with a cycling shoe with a lugged sole and recessed cleat are so much easier to clip in to. They're double sided so no worries about which side of the pedal is up when your foot contacts the pedal. And because the shoe has lugs you're much less likely for your foot to slide off the pedal if you don't get it just right the first time. During the brief time I tried true road pedals there were two things I did like about them. One is the pedal force is spread out over a wider area of the shoe as opposed to an MTB pedal. On long rides this makes a difference - your foot gets more tired with the MTB pedal. The other is pedal weight. The PD-M8120 spreads the pedal force across the shoe very much like a road pedal. I can really feel the difference compared to my old Shimano PD-M530's. Whereas PD-M8120's are not as light as road pedals, they are lighter than the M530's. So bottom line, much easier to clip in, lighter than old MTB pedals, and very comfortable on long rides. Highly recommended!
Solid and versatile pedal
Great multi-use and multi surface pedal. I picked these up for my gravel bike and love them for their versatility and stability with the larger surface area. I know they're a bit heavier than other pedals, but being able to jump on my bike without riding shoes is really nice. I rode with Time pedals for years, but I didn't like how the retention spring was in the front so if I was really cranking hard, my foot could actually shift forward slightly. On the other hand, the engagement on SPD compared to a Time ATAC pedal is a bit enemic - it engages with a little 'click' rather than the SNAP that accompanied the ATAC. All in all, I'm super happy with these pedals and would recommend them without pause.
Perfect pedal for any bike, including road, gravel
I'm a former bike shop employee and cyclocross racer. I average about 4000 miles a year on the bike and this year will be over 5000 miles. I've used road and mountain pedals from everyone and I still prefer Shimano SPD mountain pedals for all of my bikes. These XT pedals are bulletproof, double-sided, easy to get in and out of, have adjustable tension for the cleats and the cleats themselves are easy to walk in with mountain shoes from any company. The pedals are high quality, good looking and maintenance free. You really can't go wrong and the larger platform provides additional stability and addresses the myth that "road pedals" are more stable. The soles of bike shoes are already stiff and the extra couple millimeters of width on road-specific shoes literally does nothing for real world stability. Using Shimano mountain cleats on all of your bikes also eliminates the need for additional shoes and cleats, and makes walking around when not on the bike a lot easier. I also have used XTR pedals and I prefer the XT 8120s because of the addition of the platform, the smoothness of the click getting in and out and the durability. MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
First time clipless
I've always ridden flats for mountain biking but decided to try clipping in because of claims some people have made about climbing efficiency. Honestly, I don't really notice a difference when climbing - the effort seems the same - and I'd say tech climbing is actually more difficult. But I love them for descending. Flow trails, tech trails, jump lines... It's all better clipped in. As for the pedals themselves, I find them easy to get in and out of as a clipless newbie. I thought the platform would give a little more support for the foot, but the sole of the show seems to hover above the platform. To be fair, I don't feel like I need the extra support like I initially thought I would. What the platform does do is give me something to push on when I do occasionally miss the clip in. Don't see myself going back to flats except for drills.
Nice SPDs
I got these because of a recommendation for an SPD with greater stability than the typical but I honestly haven’t noticed a difference. They’re fine quality. Their stance is wider than the pedals they replaced. I was thinking they could double as flats but the cleat interface rises above the platform.
Pedal Power
This is my second pair of these pedals (a pair for each bike) and I enjoy using these. They aren’t the lightest out there but the wide cage around the clip makes pedaling and clipping in easier. Other than that I forget they are even there. They just work.
Perfect for commuting, urban, and trail use
After trying out some Candy 1 pedals, I realized that I wanted 1) a larger platform to facilitate standing starts at stoplights, and 2) the ability to adjust my clip-out effort. These Shimano PD-M8120 pedals are absolutely fantastic for my needs and work great with both SH-51 and SH-56 cleats. Not only does the platform work well at stoplights, it's also allows quick trips with sandals or whatever else you might be wearing. This is one of the most versatile pedals I've tried.
Shimano is not what it used to be
I love the large pedal service and decent weight. Shimano just is not the reliable brand it onces was. I have play in the pedal in less than a month so I will have to open it up and adjust it. The seals are garbage so once you open it the end is nigh. Also I don't know what happened with their cleats but they used to be good for a year or more. I now need to replace my cleats at least once a season. Shimano has really fallen off as a company.
I’m A Noob Soo...
I am brand new to clipless pedals. Overall great purchase! They for sure improve your technique, and are more efficient than normal pedaling. Because I’m new to this I don’t know if it’s just me, but clipping in and out is not as easy as it sounds. My cleats are alined, and they are compatible with the pedal but sometimes I don’t even clip in because its so frustrating. I give 5 stars anyway because they do what they are supposed to do.
