These reviews usually read: "packaging and shipping were great but I haven't tried it, it's for storage." I liked the ability to buy smaller amounts, the three-pack, and the fact that it was gluten-free and contained no fillers or extenders. But before I put any more money into an untried product, I wanted to know how it tasted and how long it would keep once opened. So I decided to experiment. Three and a half weeks ago I opened the diced chicken pouch and have used it about twice a week to prepare quick, simple meals: chicken salad, chicken chunks in a tossed green salad, chicken curry and chicken soup/stew. All tasted good -- much better than I expected from emergency rations. Once reconstituted, it really is just what I wanted, pre-cooked white meat chicken, an ingredient, not a meal. But with basic cooking skills, water, herbs and spices, and vegetables, it forms the basis for some good meals! It has a good texture and is easy to work with -- reconstitutes in cold water, hot water, or boiled for soup. I don't recommend eating it like popcorn, though -- the dust will make you cough! Almost a month after opening, the freeze-dried chicken chunks remain fresh-looking and smelling. The sturdy pouch is resealable and I left the oxygen absorber inside the pouch, but didn't take any other measures to keep it fresh in my pantry cupboard. So the eight portions could be spread out over the course of a month if necessary, which is important to know for planning. This product is lightweight and looks like it will travel well tucked into a backpack, too -- something not true of standard canned goods. All this made me feel very good about ordering this larger protein supply when it went on sale. There are bloggers out there who advocate cooking with these products on a regular basis, which I cannot afford to do. But I am glad I gave it a test drive in my kitchen.
