Perfect Bike Pack
Initial impression: Lightweight, compact, and ideal for those looking to hit the trail with a minimalist approach. Contains two zipper compartments, one main compartment for the hydration bladder, and a front/vertical zip-pocket perfect for a wallet, keys, and a phone. If you're looking to pack more like food or snacks, there's a small amount of room left in the main compartment with the hydration bladder. Use: Single-track mountain biking. The hydration pack/size was enough for my ride, which lasted about 2 hours. Any longer/further and I would have needed to carry additional water or find a location for refill. Additionally, the drinking straw has a locking mechanism at the end so water isn't leaking out of the end of the mouthpiece. Fit: Very light, with a snug fit against my upper/mid-back. Straps are adjustable. For reference, I'm 5'8", 160 lbs, and typically wear a medium-sized unisex shirt. The pack didn't bounce around, and I hardly noticed it during drops or on rocky/bumpy terrain. I highly recommend this pack for mountain biking.
Good lightweight hydration pack
I have had a long history with CamelBak packs over the last few decades going back to the 90's. I have always been a fan of their products and this one is no different. Compared to the previous generation Classic, I found that the pack itself to feel a little lighter weight. The straps feel a little more breathable, and the pack in general feels a little better padded and more comfortable on the back. The outer material of the pack feels similar to a nylon windbreaker material, very light compared to the previous generation. I do question if that negatively impacts how well insulated it is on hot summer days. The quick-connect hose is also a nice feature on the newer model, making it very easy to clean and install the reservoir without the hose being in the way. On the downside, having the reservoir in a zippered pouch does make it more difficult to refill mid-activity than the previous generation which had a flap that covered the lid. Pros: Breathable straps and comfortable padding Lightweight pack material Quick-connect hose is easy to clean Very streamlined (more aero on the bike) Cons: Not as easy to refill as previous generations Reservoir is 15oz smaller than previous model Might not be as well insulated
Really good hydration pack with a few issues.
Overall I really like this pack. It does its job well, but has a few drawbacks. First, the good: This pack is really light. Like don't-even-know-you're-wearing-it-if-it's-empty light. Even with a full water reservoir it's pretty light. The water reservoir has a nice big opening for filling and one of the best features is a handle built into the opening that allows you to hold it with one hand while you fill and work the faucet with the other hand. The screw-on cap seals easily and is held on by a plastic strap so it's always handy and you can't loose it. Another great feature is the quick release drinking hose. It pops off the reservoir with a press of a lever and the pack doesn't leak with it off. Much easier to deal with cleaning with it off. And the drinking hose has a valve on it! I have an older hydration pack that constantly drips so this is a big plus for me. The bag itself has a big pocket for the reservoir (with a fabric loop that wraps around a hook at the top to keep the reservoir in place) that makes it easy to get it in and out and is big enough to hold a few other things. There's also an external pocket that will hold more stuff. It's not a large amount of storage, but it's enough for some snacks, a multitool, an extra tube and other small stuff. The straps keep it in place well; I haven't had any issues with it shifting on me. The padding that rests against your back is nice and comfortable. I'm not sure if it will be too warm against the back in the heat, but I don't think it will. Now for the not so good: The straps are uncomfortable. They are lightweight and mostly mesh, but I find that they dig into the front of my shoulders. With multiple layers on it's not too bad, but with only one layer it's quite uncomfortable. I do seem to get used to it after a few minutes, but I'm not sure it will be comfortable enough on really long rides (I've only used to for about 90 minutes continuously so far). The worst part about the pack is drying the reservoir. This is a problem with every hydration pack I've used. To air dry it you need to stuff something in there that will hold it open. I usually use a tall water bottle. They do sell a plastic part that will do this, but really shouldn't that be included rather than a twelve dollar add-on? The hose is also tricky to get all the water out of and dried thoroughly. There are also a couple features listed that I can't figure out. There is a "helmet carry" feature which allows you to attach your helmet to the pack when you're not wearing it. But I can't figure out how that's supposed to work. And there are no instructions with the pack or online to show how to use it. There also claims to be "integrated tool organization". The only thing I can figure out here is that there is a pocket and inside the pocket is a small plastic carabiner style hook sewn in. It would be useful for keys, but it's not exactly "integrated tool organization". But, as I said initially it's a good pack and I'm happy I got it.
High quality product - love it
Really love this pack for cycling. I wanted a smaller pack with a bright color for road rides. The Safety Yellow is terrific - very visible. The pack fits extremely well, and the mesh that comes in contact with your back really helps to keep the sweat off of your body. The smaller outside pocket is just big enough to carry your all-in-one tool, your tire irons, a few candy bars, and whatever small miscellaneous items you need on a ride. The larger inner compartment gets eaten up by the bladder, but if you choose to not use the bladder, you can fit a spare tire, your wallet, and a down vest (plus your phone). Terrific size. Built well. Super comfortable. High quality product.
Sturdy and comfortable
It is well-constructed from breathable material with comfortable straps that have wire reinforcement. While the straps were slightly broad for my frame (5 feet, petite build), they were not uncomfortable and wearing an extra layer helped a lot. It is the perfect size for a short to moderate walk or hike, but you will need to refill if going on a longer outing. The extra pocket worked well for my phone and snacks.
Lightweight and Reliable
Super lightweight. Holds lots of water, easy to drink from and doesn't leak. Came in super handy during 14er season out here in Denver.
Poorly designed and constructed shoulder straps
I wanted a simple hydro pack for day bikes and that would fit under my jacket for winter trips. This pack seemed like it would work. Unfortunately the straps are thin and unstructured so that the stays that area used for the adjustable breast strap would roll over the strap making the strap bunch up into a single strand. Really poor design.
Great for a short bike ride or hike!
I really like this hydration system! It's not too big nor too small for that short bike ride or hike. There's enough room for keys, cell phone, and ID as well as a snack or two. It's so easy to fill and empty. The only thing I would recommend is that a drying system and cleaning tools be included or at least available.
Do Not Buy This
Bladder leaked badly from day one, to the point I've never bothered to use it outside of trying to get it to not leak. And I might even be willing to admit I might be doing something wrong, but you know what? If your product's main job is to store water, being able to reliably retain that water should be a bit higher on your list of design priorities than it is, based on the sheer number of complaints I see about leaking bladders. If you're a runner, go buy the Salomon Adv Skin 5 Set Hydration Vest instead.
Just as described.
Just as described. Lots of room and a zipper to hold snacks and keys. The mouth piece doesn't leak.
