Sticking With The Inreach Mini

This is a good device and excellent first iteration. The device itself seems tough, lasts just over a week, and recharges in a couple hours. A bit of a bummer that its USB-B aka micro USB when everything is switching to USB-C. The app works very well and the seamless messaging between satellite and cell data (when available) is a nice feature for long trips since you can tell everyone to simply text your Zoleo number without worry of missed messages as you go in and out of coverage. Satellite messaging reliability has been good which is to be expected since its the exact same network Garmin uses. Ultimately though this device has some cons that made me keep my Inreach Mini. The main ones are that the device has no screen/UI built in and requires a phone to function as a 2-way communicator. If your phone battery dies or you lose/break your phone then the Zoleo becomes a 1 way communicator with SOS/Check-In only but you have no idea whats being sent back. This isnt great particularly with the SOS function which contacts IERCC which is a routing center so no phone means you cannot tell them the nature of your emergency. With an Inreach Mini you can use the device with or without your phone. Without a phone the UI is basic and composing messages is slow but it can be done so its a redundancy which is a big selling point in a safety device like this. My other gripe is with the plans. They are more expensive than Garmin for any type of plan, particularly compared to Garmin's annual plans (Zoleo has no reduced plan pricing for a yearly subscription). There is also an upcharge/add-on to add unlimited track markers and, more importantly, make the simple "I'm Okay" check-in message unlimited where all Garmin plans include the unlimited use of 3 customizable check-ins. I find the latter much more valuable since you can compose your own check-ins like "I'm safe, running late" or "Setting up camp, all is well". Ultimately the Zoleo really is only better than Garmin if you want to text a lot then you get something like their mid-tier plan (250 messages per month) and do app to app communication (massive 950 character limit instead of 160). If you're simply shopping for an emergency beacon and a device to send simple one or two sentence updates to family/friends then the Zoleo plans are quite a bit worse in terms of value compared to Garmin. In addition to the upcharge for unlimited check-ins, Zoleo has a higher minimum plan charge, requires 3 consecutive months of service at initial activation, and has a small maintenance fee to hibernate the account which you want to pay otherwise you pay the activation and 3 consecutive months of service penalty all over again. Point being dont just compare the up front costs of the devices because if you factor in the costs of the plans over the projected months/years you plan on using it that cost savings may go right out the window. In the end I do like the device but the requirement of a phone to really function as intended and higher subscription costs are a put-off. It would be nice to have a higher end device option with the ability to directly compose messages. In the short term, and at a minimum, I'd really like to see them adopt similar unlimited customizable check-ins and add those into the plan costs without the hefty upcharge and also roll out a more cost competitive plan structure. As it stands I could really only recommend a Zoleo to people who want to send long detailed updates or have lengthy conversations which is the only area it truly excels. I'm sure some people will find value in that, particularly solo hikers on a long thru or trip abroad, but for shorter trips or day trips the Zoleo isnt doing enough better to warrant its extra service costs.

Subscription practice not customer-centric

This is about Zoleo's subscription plan which is required for the product to function. The review reflects my dissatisfaction with the administration of that plan. The product worked great. Zoleo requires you to subscribe for 90 days, at which time you can suspend your subscription but have to pay a minimum amount to maintain your Zoleo account. I had read about this before purchasing the product so this is fine. What isn't fine is that they don't allow you to suspend your account in advance of the 90th day. Instead, you need to go into your account on that day and suspend it. If you don't, the next day, it lapses into the payment period and you are billed $40 for the next month. I contacted them about this and was told "our system is currently configured to operate this way." The purpose of the policy is transparent - people miss the tiny window they make available to suspend the account, resulting in additional revenue for them at the expense of the customer. Had I known this in advance I would have purchased a Spot instead. Hope this helps!

Love it!

I’ve had my Zoleo for 2 seasons now and it works great, communication is easy and it has worked for me every time. I did my research before buying so the fees were not a surprise to me, and I figured out how to manage them to fit my needs and budget. I recommend all do the same, as all those devices have their own subscription quirks. I love being able to send and receive texts and emails when out in the wilderness, as well as my location. Also love that the SOS button cannot be pushed inadvertently if the device is in a pack or pocket. I only needed tech support once early on and received the proper response quickly.

Great Device, recommend it!

Great device; I read a lot of ratings and I'm gad I chose this over the Garmin mini. This is so easy to set and use, and the battery lasts a very long time. I have used it on a half dozen trips where there was tree cover and sometimes the message goes through quick, and a couple times it took a bit longer, but overall I am very happy with my choice. I wanted one that I didn't have to get frustrated with being able to text and see a small screen, so the interface with my phone is great. If my phone dies, I can still check in or SOS without the phone. Feel much safer having it in wilderness for an emergency.

SMSs not delivered (only to the App).

One unexplainable and inconvenient feature of this --- caused me great stress, and almost entirely defeated its purpose. Feature is: SMS vs App-messages. If your contact has the App downloaded, then the messages to that contact does NOT go as SMS/Text, but ONLY within the app as app-messages. This is outright silly. In my case, my contact (wife) didn't receive my message for 2-3 days, and had to re-install the app to get the messages after a phone-call from me. This feature is outrageous and I can guarantee that it is not saving any money for Zoleo. It's almost a punishment for downloading the app!!! Also, SMS to one contact was never delivered (even though ZOLEO claims, it was).

A great alternative* to Garmin

I'd originally gotten an InReach Mini, but decided to try the Zoleo too. Turns out Zoleo was far better for my needs. It was able to catch a signal and send 9/10 times even as I went up and down ravines, and as I already had my phone for mapping it wasn't difficult to carry in addition. *This is NOT a replacement for the InReach as it doesn't have any of the mapping capabilities at all, but if you're wanting satellite messaging only with an SOS option this is the best bang for your buck by far. In the 8mos I've had it they've pushed out several updates with different functionalities requested by users, which is an extra bonus because from what I've seen with my other Garmin devices, they don't care half as much.

Zero Customer Support

The phone tree goes to voice mail and they do not call back. "Live Chat" cannot find an agent and disconnects you. Email support does not respond. This is all during business hours. There are no options for a live agent. The reason for my call is that I did not get a verification code when registering the account. It finally came 15 minutes later, but by that time I could not get back in to use the code because the email was associated with an "unverified user". Go figure. Leaving for Costa Rica soon so won't have this device registered for the trip. Should have purchased Garmin's inReach.

Great product!

Zoleo is a great product! I have peace of mind when I’m out backcountry skiing or when I’m driving on roads without service. I love that I can use the app to message as well use the simple buttons on the actual device, such as the “check in” feature. Its sends a notification to your specified “check in” contact that includes your current GPS location. I also love that I can change my “check in” contact through your account. The light combinations on the device make it easy to tell which mode you’re in. I’m very excited that Zoleo is a part of my outdoor gear and well worth the money!

Zoleo in Alaska

Came to Alaska with my Globalstar Qualcomm GSP-1700 satellite phone thinking there was going to be service. But I was surprised when I powered it up and found none. Research and direct contact with Globalstar found that when Globalstar updated their Alaska Data Facility it worked well for the Garmin satellite texting devices and no longer for their satellite phone, so it was an emergency need that took me to my Zoleo purchase and perfect timing also, as REI was running a discount on the price. First weekend the Zoleo took a 36-mile ATV ride out and back to the Knik Glacier. I worked perfect as I sent many "checking in" texts with my current location to my family and friends. I have since added the optional automatic tracking feature, which allows you to set a desirable tracking interval.

Secure and reasonably priced.

I bought a number of different emergency satellite devices to use and return all except Zoleo. It’s easy. I have a secure number and messages reach me whether I am on cell, WiFi, or satellite. It uses same system as others but at fraction of the cost. The mid level subscription has ample message allowance so receiving multiple messages is not an issue. I love that it’s more waterproof than others and with a simple push I can check in without anyone “following me” unless I want that service. It’s been great and I am glad I didn’t pay double just because something is popular. Great purchase.

Device died after only three uses

Zero help from customer service. The device died after three uses in a little over 2 years. When I called customer service they basically told me to kick rocks. Thank God I never had to trust my life to this piece of junk device! Stick with a reputable company like Garmin.
