Worth the purchase!
These gaiters have been through it all after 4 seasons of tree planting and other forestry exploration work. Quick and easy to apply, breathable n fast drying! I am 6'4 and the XL fits perfectly. Two tears the first season but sewed up with no issues since, also had to tape the bottom heel strap as it is decaying. No complaints at all, only flaws I would consider would be the top buckle strap loosening occasionally, the little bottom velcro flap strength and the Quality of the bottom strap. not a big deal Hoping to get another couple seasons out of them! 100% will buy again! Thank you!:)
Caveat Emptor - Buckles Breaking
How is everyone breaking buckles after one hike, while others have been using these gaiters for years without issue? After breaking my pair after one hike, returning them, getting another pair, and breaking the second pair after the first hike as well, I contacted Outdoor Research support to ask directly, and I got an answer. See attached screenshot. It turns out Outdoor Research knows that the buckles are breaking and continues to sell these gaiters made with a "production error". They have not recalled them, have not announced the error on their website, have not pulled this product from trusted partners like REI or even their own online store. They're just crossing their fingers that your defective gaiters wont ruin your outing. As you can see in the reviews, these are, when not made with a production error, apparently robust gaiters that will get you through many extreme conditions. No wonder people with years of enjoyment with these are wondering "how folks are managing to break the buckle after 1 hike". The answer is simple: we've been sold a defective product. You can see from OR's support person, that the corrected models with non production error buckles will apparently be available in the Spring models of 2022. But if one were to order a pair of these in Spring, how would one know if they are getting the "fixed" new version that wont break or yet another defective pair from the old inventory? If they're okay with selling defective gaiters to you now, what makes you think they won't be okay with selling you the rest of their defective inventory before the new models are made available? I cannot recommend these until for sure all the bogus "production error" models are out of circulation, and without being able to tell the difference between defective and fixed models, your guess is as good as mine as to when it might be safe to buy these again. Shame on OR for identifying a production error resulting in broken products and continuing to sell them.
good quality, bad sizing
The quality of the gaiters is great. But if you're trying to get the right size by looking at the "boot size" on the website (rei.com), they won't fit right. I was figuring "boot size" meant the size of hiking boot you'd wear, but I guess they're talking about a different type of boot. I wear a size 9.5 hiking boot, so I ordered Large gaiters. I ended up exchanging for Mediums, and could have probably fit the Smalls best. Larges wrapped so far around my calves that the velcro strip didn't match up, and Medium size was nearly the same way. It seems like they should be sized by the circumference of your calves. That would be the best way to make sure they fit properly.
Disappointing
These used to be my go to gaiters. I’m now on my 3rd pair in the last few years. My most recent pair the buckles on both straps broke on the same hike. The first pair that I bought years ago lasted a long time until I wore them out. I don’t know what happened but the quality of these gaiters have gone down the drain. So disappointed they failed again.
Money well spent
I have owned a set of these gaiters for 20 years or so. They show no signs of ever wearing out. I have used them for snow/glacier travel, keeping my feet dry in wet meadows and for keeping sand and scree out of my boots in the Cascades. Excellent investment.
Another broken buckle
Sadly, I must add my name to list of buyers who've had a broken buckle on the Outdoor Research gaiter. It happened on only the second use. This was the only brand/ size that worked well for me. The fabric was excellent, they stayed up well, it's just too bad that OR has a problem with their buckles.
Required
Some say that Goretex is needed when it come to gaitors. I don't know for sure. When picking a size, I found that none of the brands helped with deciding what size is best. After some trial and error, I found that the size is reffered to the size of your calves. It's all about your calves!!!! I wear my gaitors all year round. They protect my boots, my panths from getting wet when goeing through brush that is wet or even damp. My legs do not get extra warm or hot when wearing these. That's why I wear them year round. So worth it in the long run.
Second pairs, love it!
It is my second pairs in 8 years and it's because they've been beaten up. These are reliable, functional and really waterproof. I've used them in dirty and wet conditions more than enough, worn these for days, always been satisfied. In snow and alpine conditions, they do the job and keep the snow away from my boots and pant, also save my goretex pants from crampons hits and repaired them with duck tape (that hold well for years). I wear 11.5 US and with alpine boots my XL was perfect, but with regular boots and snowshoe boots, my L have a better fit.
Broke 2 miles in
I was excited to use these. Unfortunately the heel buckles broke on both gaiters the very first time I used them. They broke 2 miles into a 10 mile hike. Very disappointing. They need to reinforce this buckle as it is closest to the ground and is subject to a lot of forces. The rest of the gaiter held up ok, but this Is a fatal flaw in my opinion
Armor For My Legs
I love these gaiters. Wore 'em for a month through the Desert (with a capital D), couldn't tell you what it feels like to have sand in your shoes. They are bomber. I leave all kinds of traces when I am marching through the brush with invincible armored Crocodile legs. Seriously, these are great. I must be getting old if I'm this excited about... gaiters.
