Mercury Mitten

The Mercury Mitten is Black Diamond's most versatile and popular year-round mitt for skiers, climbers, and alpinists. Remove the liner for summer expeditions, and keep the two together for winter climbs. A BDry insert gives this mitten exceptional waterproof protection, and the removable liner's innovative PrimaLoft Gold synthetic insulation feels and compresses like down yet protects your hand with long-lasting water-resistance.

Pertex Shield also assists with waterproofing as well as providing a four-way stretch for freedom of movement. The Mercury also features a goat leather palm for a good grip, Kevlar stitching for durable reinforcement, and a split finger design that give the removable liner more dexterity.

Warm and comfy

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Very comfortable and warm gloves BUT the wrist tightening straps are hard to pull with the small plastic ends on straps. On the last day of riding the strap end pulled off.

Awesome mittens for 20° F and below

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I purchased these mittens for myself about a month ago and have been very pleased. I have not tested them in any temperatures below 0°F, but they have worked well for keeping my hands safe and warm in single digits and teens. If I'm going for a slow walk they work well even up to 32°F. I haven't tested them above freezing, but I'd imagine they would be too warm. In addition to standard hiking and walking activities, I took them out on the ski slopes on a sunny day with a high of 20°. My hands were never cold; I even took them off at times to cool my hands down. My main use for these is bike riding. Your hands are largely static when you ride in the winter, so I needed a pair that would serve me well and keep my hands warm. I've ridden several miles at a time with the temperature in the teens and been completely comfortable. These are a fantastic investment if your concern is hand warmth and you are willing to sacrifice some dexterity. For me, they're worth every dime I paid and if you are always outside, then you will probably appreciate a pair of these, assuming you live in the north or Canada. Please note that I have used it more than several times, but the next option was "I have put it through the wringer" and I have not yet. Hope this helps!

So warm

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Bought these for my 2 pre teen boys. They are very warm. Tested down to 0. No issues whatsoever. Would recommend without reservations. I do agree that they should come with the wrist straps like Hestra.

Great value

Familiarity:

Not perfect they?re just mittens. But compared to other offerings they are a good value in terms of construction and design features. Run very small however and the insulation is so so but there?s plenty of it. Great articulation maybe the best I?ve ever seen in terms of mitts. Pretty tight fit though had to get XL even though I?m almost always between a M and L. Hard to pass up for the price considering others are double the price with no real advantages

My major gripes with these mittens: ? No wrist leash. IMO, all ski/snowboarding mitts should have a wrist leash, even if it's detachable. ? The split finger thing. I'm just not a fan. Yes, you can remove the liner, but then you have to replace it with a different liner, because the liner is where all the heat is. ? The liner is all the heat. This mitten is its own system. So, if your intention is to layer additional liners with these, size up one or two. The liner isn't conducive to layering at your typical size. I also don't like that little strip of Velcro to keep the liner in place. I think the intention is right, but it's not for me. What I really like about this mitten: ? It's solid AF. This is a tough mitten. The attention to detail, the material and build all suggest this is a hard-working mitt that can take a beating. ? Obviously, it's warm AF. Rated for -30, it's a warm mitten. In Minnesota, it really hasn't been cold enough yet to wear these comfortably. I run a bit warm and I'm obviously used to cold and really cold temps, but still... this is a warm mitten. ? The fit is extremely tailored. The mitten has a great fit, being both snug and just right. The gauntlet fits over bulky coats. ? I like the carabiner loop. That's a nifty little feature that almost, but not quite, makes up for the absence of a wrist leash. How I planned to use this mitt: ? Winter camping and backpacking. Because of the hard-working, warm nature of these mittens, it's plenty feasible to fulfill that need. Because of the lacking wrist leash and the less-than-favor system for layering, I went with another set of mitts (Marmot Expedition). ? Daily dog walking and work around the house. This glove is overkill for most functions. ? Skiing and snowboard. This is probably what I'll use the mittens for most, because I tend not to shed mittens often when skiing or snowboarding, making the layering system a non-issue and layering too. If you're on the fence, consider looking at the equivalent OR or Marmot mittens. I almost went with OR, because I'm a fan of their stuff, but also because the quality runs higher than most. I decided on Marmot because the product design worked better for my needs and the price matched the BD mitts.
