Smoke itself is decent, the probes not so much, the warranty isn't really 2 years
I got one of these for Christmas. The base unit and remote display seem fine, but the air temperature probe fails routinely after just a couple of uses. It's constantly losing the connection to the Smoke, setting off the alarm every time, and generally making the whole setup barely usable. Be warned that the warranty on the probes is just SIX MONTHS, not the 2 years that the Smoke listing says. Mine was a Christmas present, so the warranty was over before I really even got to use it for a summer BBQ. Clearly Thermoworks knows that these probes have a high failure rate, hence the non-warranty on the most fragile part of the system.

Great Chefs Tool
I have only used my Smoke Remote once, but I cooked a tri-tip in my smoker, and the results were fantastic! It may be lack of knowledge, but the only negative is the constant alarms going off, and you need to shut them off. Instructions on use could be a little clearer.

Great value
This is great, I've used inexpensive thermometers that were close but this is top shelf while still being reasonably priced.

Love this thing!
I used it with a pork loin roast for my 1st attempt on my gas grill. It makes it so easy to confirm the under hood temps. The meat probe was also very accurate. I used it last time for under hood temp only on some cold smoked block cheeses

Great tooll!
I used my Smoke once to smoke a brisket and it worked great. I determined that the air temperature thermometer on my Kamado Joe was off by 20 degrees.
Only wish the Smoke had came with a storage case.

Good, but not great
Excellent tool for grilling. I love being able to use the remote to see the temps inside while I'm grilling or smoking in the summer heat in Florida. I get to stay in the A/C while everything cooks!!
The only downside is the temperature probes need to be replaced about once a year

Why did you choose this?

America's Test Kitchen. Two probes, air and food.

Heard good things about it

Recommend online for longevity. I’m a cook and I need my stuff to last. We’ll see.

The Smoke specs show Operating Range 32 to 122°F (0 to 50°C). I live in MN and winters are getting cold here. Can I use it outside when it is below 32°F?

Yes, you can. However, we recommend that you don't leave it outside between cooks.

Can this be used in an oven as well as a gas grill and a smoker?

It sure can, although you need to use caution when grilling so you don't expose the probes to too much heat via flare up. Here's an article that should help:

https://blog.thermoworks.com/bbq-grilling/grilling-with-thermometers-probe-safety/

How quick does it read a meat temp? I am going between this and the ONE, but love to smoke too. Would be great if this will work for both.

Actually, you need both types of thermometers, because they have very different functions. A leave-in thermometer (such as Smoke) is designed to track temperatures over an extended period of time with moderate-heat cooking methods such as smoking, oven-roasting, deep-frying, home brewing, and Sous Vide.

For example, if you are using Smoke to monitor a roast as it cooks, start by inserting the Pro-Series meat probe’s tip into the thermal center of the meat (the coolest spot) and set the thermometer to the desired pull temperature. Once this target temperature is reached, the alarm will sound.Next, use an instant-read thermometer (such as a Thermapen ONE) to double-check the temperature in multiple spots to make sure that there aren’t any undercooked areas. It’s fairly common to discover that you didn’t get the initial probe placement exactly right. After all, it can be difficult to determine the exact thermal center of a large, raw piece of meat. If you discover any undercooked areas, move the probe and continue the cook.

This cycle (monitoring with a leave-in thermometer and double-checking with an instant-read thermometer) continues until you are certain the meat is truly ready to pull from the heat.To answer your first question: The Pro-Series meat probe that comes with Smoke reads temperatures in approximately 3-5 seconds.

Here's a great article that discusses the differences between instant-read and leave-in thermometers and why you need both types:

I'm mostly going to do oven cooking. Must I use both probes if I only have one meat and I don't care about tracking the oven temp?

No, you don't need to use both probes. You can use one probe on the Smoker without the other one plugged in. On the side of the Smoke with no probe, turn the probe's alarm off by pressing the ON/OFF button on the front. If the alarm starts beeping, press any button (such as one of the UP/DOWN buttons) and the beeping will stop.

will the new wifi app give me the capability to leave the house and track temps far away from my home ? or is this limited to 300' again from my phone.

Yes, you sure can! Gateway connects Smoke to the Internet via Wi-Fi. You will install an app on your mobile device and that app will relay the information to you. You can track temperatures anywhere you take your mobile device - no matter how far away you go.

Can u connect more than just the 2 probes to it?

No, you can't. Smoke accepts two probes. If you need a 4-probe thermometer, you'll want to look at Signals, Smoke X4, or ThermaQ 2.

https://www.thermoworks.com/smokex

https://www.thermoworks.com/thermaq2

How much does the smoke gateway cost?

The price is $89.

Where do I place the base unit in my smoker?

It has a strong magnet on the back. I connect it to the outside of the pellet bin on my campchef smoker, that way it is far enough away from the heat to be safe and still work great.

Could the gateway be used simultaneously with the Smoke's current receiver or will there be a conflict involved if utilizing both interfaces? Also, (if known) how intuitive would the app be regarding features such as data refresh rate, graphs, history, and personalizing names of probe source?

Yes, you may use both the Smoke's Radio Frequency (RF) Receiver and Gateway (which connects to the mobile device app via Wi-Fi) at the same time. The ThermoWorks app is very intuitive. The data refreshes one time per minute. The app includes graphs, history, and personalization of the probe source's name.

So what's the difference between this and the ThermaQ WiFi 2channel alarm unit?

Here are the differences between Smoke and ThermaQ WiFi:

- Smoke uses Pro-Series® Probes with thermistor type sensors. ThermaQ WiFi and ThermaQ Blue ar the most accurate and rugged BBQ thermometer available. It uses Type K thermocouple probes which are known for high accuracy and durability.

- There are thousands of Type K probe options available for use with ThermaQ WiFi. There are a limited number of Pro-Series probe options available to Smoke users.

- Both Smoke and ThermaQ WiFi feature two channels with high and low alarms and continuous Min/Max displays for each channel.

- Smoke transmits data wirelessly via radio frequency up to 300 feet line-of-sight. With the aid of Gateway, Smoke transmits data to your smart device via a Wi-Fi connection.
