A great lightweight filter

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This filter was great! It’s so small, packable, and has an incredible flow rate to get clean water FAST. I was able to fit the filter in just my pocket and hike without any discomfort. It’s a lightweight option to throw in your backpack and really cut down on weight. Also, the filter was able to produce 1.5 liters of clean drinkable water for me in less than a minute! It’s great to cut down on carrying surplus water when you have access to streams and ponds. The water had no off taste due to the silicone squeeze bag or stream thanks to the activated carbon filter. It’s become a new staple in my day hikes and extended backpacking trips! Katadyn Group gave me this free product to try.

Ultralight Simplicity Done Right

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When it comes to water filters for backcountry use, it’s hard to beat a system that’s compact, easy to use, and reliable. The Katadyn BeFree Filter AC 1.0L checks all those boxes. I’ve been using this setup on recent trips, and it's quickly become a go-to for short outings, scouting days, and minimalist pack-outs into the backcountry. The first thing that stood out is just how compact and lightweight the system is. The soft-sided bottle design allows it to roll up tight, making it incredibly easy to stash in a pocket or the corner of a pack. That’s a big deal when every inch of space and ounce of weight counts. For quick-hit outings or as a backup system, this thing is hard to beat. Filling the reservoir is simple, thanks to the wide-mouth opening. Whether I was dipping into a creek or catching water from a slow seep, it scooped water quickly and without frustration. The flow rate is solid for a unit this size, and it doesn’t feel like a chore to get a liter of clean water out of it. One of the features I appreciated most was how easy it is to clean. No back-flushing or extra gear required, just add a bit of clean water, shake it around, and you’re good to go. That means less downtime and fewer parts to lose or break. The added carbon pad is also a nice touch. It noticeably improves the taste of the water, especially in areas where water sources can be a bit funky. Durability-wise, this system is made for lightweight use, so I’m not tossing it in the gravel or crushing it under a heavy load, but for what it’s designed to do, it holds up well. Just be smart about where you store it in your pack, and it should last a good long while. I will probably upgrade to their more durable version though, because I am not nice to my gear.. Final thoughts: If you're looking for an ultralight, packable water filter that’s easy to clean, quick to use, and improves taste with minimal fuss, the Katadyn BeFree AC 1.0L is a great option. Whether it's your primary filter for fast-packing or a backup for longer trips, it’s one of those pieces of gear that just fits seamlessly into a streamlined outdoor system. *As a disclaimer, Katadyn Group gave me this free product to try, however this is my honest review about this product. Thanks guys!

This Is Perfect And Lightweight.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thank you Expertvoice and Katadyn for giving me this quality product to test and review. I’ve been able to use BeFree AC 1.0 Liter Microfilter for several weeks and have had no issues with it. First, if you want a lightweight option and don’t want to carry a bladder in your pack. This filter Is a great choice, it packs down well and it’s so easy to use. The flow is great, easy to use and so easy to clean. The water quality is crisp and clean thanks to the filtration system. This is a great choice for all who thru hike, runners or just want water on a walk. I’ll be using this through out the summer for all my backpacking trips. Thank you again Katadyn.

Must have filter for adventuring

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Same great filter with a couple great new perks. The loop on the cap is a great addition for carrying or clipping to a pack. Water in CO is pretty spectacular but the carbon filter is a great option for places with more dirty water. The size and weight is effectively the same with more options so highly recommend getting one!

A Packable, Easy-to-Use Filter

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have tried just about every ultralight water filtration system on the market and been repeatedly impressed by the BeFree's flow rate. The BeFree AC seems even faster than the original model, filling up my one-liter water bottle within seconds. After receiving this system in the mail, I tested it on multiple dayhikes and trail runs. It held up well, and the collapsible bottle made it exceedingly easy to pack. I usually stuffed it into the mesh front pocket of my backpack so I would have easy access to it when I came across a stream. I filtered probably a few dozen liters and saw no decline in the flow rate. The bottle's large mouth opening makes filling up a breeze. Throw on the filter cartridge and cap and you can drink straight from the bottle or filter water into another container. Simply put, this filtration system is very quick and easy to use. Because I saw no decline in flow rate, I had no reason to clean the filter cartridge in the field, but I know that this is also easy. All you have to do is fill the bottle with clean water, put on the filter cartridge and cap, and shake. I know from using the original BeFree that this method works to restore the flow when gunk from water sources clogs up the filter on long backpacking trips. This method is much easier than filters that require backflushing. The BeFree AC is also slightly sleeker than the original version, which makes it easier to keep the filter in your pocket during the winter so it doesn't freeze. I have several long backpacking trips and mountain climbs scheduled this year, and I will be taking the BeFree AC as my primary water filtration system. Katadyn Group gave me this free product to try.

My new go-to recommendation

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have absolutely loved my BeFree AC so far! I’ll start with my favorite feature: the ability to field test the filter integrity with ease. This system is extremely simple to use, and equally simply to clean. It’s so nice to shake the filter to clear it rather than carry extra equipment to back flush it. The soft flask feels very durable, and the cap loop is an added bonus as I could clip it to my pack or harness. The system packs down to almost nothing when not in use. The flow rate was slightly faster than I expected, and the soft flask was easy to handle. Katadyn gave me this product free to try, and it quickly became my new go-to recommendation.

A personal favorite

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve used almost every type of water filter on the market in the last 30 years. From a variety of different pump filters, gravity filters, and bottle and straw filters. I’ve even done the iodine pill method (not my fav). And I’ll cut to the chase… the BeFree bottle filter from Katadyn is one of the best options on market. It’s simple, convenient, lightweight/packable, and incredibly fast. My fear with this type of bottle filter is the potential to puncture the soft bottle, so my solution is always to carry a second compatible bottle, but so far the bottle has held up. The flow rate makes it easy to drink straight from the bottle or to squeeze the bottle to fill up a secondary container. If you’ve used a pump filter, you’ll love how quick and convenient this is. Since I spend most of my time hiking in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest where streams are abundant, it’s nice to be able to fill up on the go without skipping a beat. Like most systems, the flow rate slows down as sediment builds up but it’s quick and easy to flush this out with some clean water (from a secondary container, or a reasonably clean stream). I tend to track innovation and updates in water filtration pretty closely and at the moment this system is my favorite. I can’t wait to see what comes out next. I was not compensated for this review but Katadyn Group did give me this free product to try.

So good it made it into my profile pic!

I used to use the Katadyn Hiker pump filter. It worked for years. When I got back into backpacking, I was amazed what portable, lightweight, small, affordable and quality options were in the market. It came down to this or the Sawyer Squeeze. The flow rate and superior container at what swayed me. I like when the bag is reliable enough to be a dependable water carrier, usually stuffed in the side pocket of my backpack. And many other folks I’ve taken outdoors have come to appreciate it from being impressed by its performance. I know I’ll be taking it on most adventure. I bought more for the Bug-Out-Bag, each vehicle, and the day pack. Affordable and efficient.

Compact & Functional

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Loved that it's low profile and collapsible. Took it down into the Grand Canyon and back up with a full pack of canyoneering gear and it was perfect. Super handy being able to filter at the technical canyon exit from Garden Creek since there were no fill stations nearby and we had a brutal hike out ahead of us in the hottest window of the day. Packed down small when not needed. Since we're often going through mucky water in slot canyons, having a lid that keeps the mouthpiece sealed off was a big plus for me. Katadyn Group gave me this free product to try. I was hesitant at first about the bottle material (vs a hard nalgene-type plastic) but it held it's own! Plus the fact that the material has a bit of a stretch actually aids quite a bit in filtering pressure (vs the old Sawyer plastic pouch versions which always burst a seam on me). Big fan.

Light and easy use

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this filter many times doing fieldwork on the Olympic peninsula and out on hikes in Washington State. This filter system is light and easy to use and store. Compared to the Sawyer 1L squeeze filter this is less cumbersome but feels a bit more likely to pop. I think this is ideal for light and fast day trips or trail running whereas the Sawyer may be better suited to short backpacking trips. It would take a bit of reassurance to trust this filter not to burst if I needed to rely on it for survival long term but it is perfect for short trips where you know there will be plenty of running water to refill if you want to save water weight.
