Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Great comfortable hiking shoes

I went through a few pair of hiking shoes this year and these ones have been the best. The amount of room in the front for your toes (toes box as they call it) really has helped me with any toe pain especially when hiking down steep terrain. Did a few days in the Tucson AZ mountains with lots of rocky terrain and they stood up well. Recently took them out in the snow and surprisingly they remained warm and most importantly dry. Great hiking shoe. Very flexible and the high ankle support make the shoe much more sturdy and give me confidence when walking on trails.

Very narrow, again :(

I have been waiting for an improvement on the previous all-weather, but this update might actually be even narrower. As a huge fan of the Lone Peak runner and boot, I would love to expand the line-up into something I can wear in wet Michigan winter/spring. I drove an hour to the nearest REI and before I could try them on, I could see the middle of the shoe taper dramatically inward. It looks tight, even when there’s no foot in it. I tried it on anyway, trying different sizes, but that narrow mid/top of foot region is markedly different than the Lone boot. Very uncomfortable and tight. This was with a thin, cotton sock. Last seasons all-weather and this current version both have plenty of reviewers complaining about the narrow fit. Altra, please look to the regular Lone boot and just make it waterproof and even insulated. Don’t mess with the shape and architecture. I will buy 3 pair and high-five whoever signs off on it. For now, I’m looking to Topo. They have a waterproof runner/boot that looks promising.

Waterproof tested and very comportable.

I love Altra shoes. This is my second pair. While I have used this pair less than the other trek shoe, I will say my feet never got wet. I am getting ready to go to the Arctic by sailboat, and there will be some hiking ashore in Svalbard. It will be wet in places. I saw the review about the shoes not being waterproof so I tested. In the tub for 10-15 submerged to ankle depth first with tissue, then with my own feet moving around. No water.

All weather shoes

My husband loves them. They are true to size and give you extra room for your toes. Water proof and very durable. We also went through mud up to our ankles and our feet were still dry.

Wet feet to the rescue!

‘All weather’ is definitely an inappropriate adjective for these hiking boots as I have experienced the very first day I wore them an absolute disappointment ! Got them for a hike in Spain , thinking they would pretty much keep my feet dry but they have failed me! I also find them to have a very weak bottom sole as they do not have goor grip as have slipped on multiple occasions as I walked over rocky surfaces. I have placed SOLE inserts and even so one can feel rough terrain shooting up your feet . Just hope Ultra can remédiate these gigs to benefit hikers seeking quality mid boots!

Boots Need a Redesign

I've owned numerous Altras racing Ironman races etc. I bought a pair year ago to hike 3, 5,000 ft peaks back East in the White Mountains, a 14'er home in CO, some other hiking, and snow days. Unlike, the 2* ratings, I waxed mine with Fajallraven wax, so it took a while to get wet back East gully hiking, but Mt. Missouri tore them up, edges started to peel, and they do not grip rock well and slide on water soaked rock. I would consider these light hiker's for dirt with some scree. I bought HANWAGs from the local Fajallraven store in Yak leather & looking at the MAKRA LIGHT GTX.

Fantastic fit, versatile boot.

Been wearing these boots for over a year, from light trail walks to hiking the Northeast and UT/AZ. My feet and ankles feel incredibly secure when wearing these. I'd recommend for anything < 8mi.

Good fit, but not truly made for wide feet

I'm and avid backpacker and wanted to try the Altra Lone Peak because of my wide feet. They fit well and there is indeed a lot of room, but for some reason they omitted the cushioning all along the perimeter of the foot bed. Only the center section has the cushioning and the insole only helps a little along the edge. If you truly have wide feet, you need the cushioning to be over the entire width. Without it, it becomes very apparent especially since they also tend to force your feet to pronate, which puts undo pressure on the outside edge. I could immediately tell that if I wore these for any backpacking trip I would be in some serious discomfort. So I'll be returning these.

Don't waste your money, get a different boot.

These shoes have tripped me by the laces alone over 5 times which is 5 times too many. The design of these shoes is horribly flawed, I don't think whoever made these shoes have a hiked a day in their life. The traction even as a brand new shoe is pretty poor and the meshing will rip pretty quickly. Once it rips say good bye to any water proofing that shoe has to offer (Its already pretty little) The decal and rubber on the ends started deteriorating one month in. Just a bad shoe.

I Don't Recommend

I bought these boots at the end of May for backpacking in the Sierra. They fit my feet right out of the box but when laced the hooks at the ankle of both boots exert pressure that leads to pain. I wore them around the house to test before hiking in them but never felt the hooks. On the first hike the pressure turned to pain in about 3 miles. I've tried numerous combinations of loose lace, tight lace, skip a hook lace but nothing helped. I tried sock combinations with heavy socks, light socks, hiking socks combined with liner socks, nothing worked. I wanted to like these boots because I love the Altra Lone Peak running shoes but I can't recommend them.

Waterproofing doesn't last

These were great for my first big backpacking trip. Very comfortable. Kept my feet dry in all sorts of rain...but just testing them out before a big trip to Alaska and the waterproofing has completely failed. This is almost a year to the day of owning the boots and walking through tall grass with a morning dew and my socks are soaked. Huge fail on what are/were great boots! They are ridiculously light and comfortable but no longer waterproof which is a big selling point for these.
